On Russian voluntary contribution to the budget of the UN Road Safety Fund

The Government of the Russian Federation has decided to allocate a new voluntary contribution of 2 million to the budget of the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF).

The Fund was established on April 12, 2018 in accordance with a UN GA resolution. The main objective of UNRSF is to finance technical assistance projects aimed at creating effective national safety management systems in order to reduce the level of deaths and injuries on the roads. The Fund also contributes to implementation of the second Decade of Action for Road Safety Plan, developed by the World Health Organization jointly with the UN regional commissions, the main goal of which is to reduce deaths in car accidents and injuries in half by 2030.

According to the UN, around 1.3 million people die on the roads every year and almost 50 million people get injured. More than 90 percent of fatal accidents occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Our country provides significant support to the work of the Fund, acting as the largest donor since its foundation. Russian representatives are members of the Fund's governing bodies, including the Advisory Board and the Steering Committee.

Russia, as a recognized leader of multilateral cooperation in road safety, is committed to its obligations and will continue to contribute to the development and strengthening of international cooperation under the auspices of the UN in order to improve road safety around the world, including in the context of preparations for the upcoming UNGA High-level Meeting on Road Safety in the summer of 2022.

We consider the UNRSF as an important tool for providing assistance to countries in need, including the CIS states. Financial support of the Fund's activities is carried out in accordance with the priorities of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of international development assistance.
