The Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office in Geneva presents an online exhibition of archival photographs dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The materials provided by the Federal Archival Agency, TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies give a heartfelt insight into the most crucial moments of the war - from the attack of Nazi Germany on the Soviet Union to the Nuremberg Trials. Among them are shots of fierce fighting, the Defense of Moscow, the Siege of Leningrad, the Battle of Stalingrad, the liberation of the European countries from the fascist yoke and everyday life of workers of the home front.

The exhibition includes the works by such eminent Soviet photographers as Max Alpert, known for his photograph “Battalion Commander” - one of the symbols of the war outbreak, Emanuel Evzerikhin, who heroically shot street fighting in Stalingrad, Mark Redkin, who after being wounded returned to the front and reached Berlin. A special place among war photographers belongs to Yevgeny Khaldey. With the Soviet Army he went through the whole war from the very beginning to the last day. His world-famous photograph of a Soviet soldier raising the Victory Banner over the Reichstag became known throughout the world as a symbol of the triumph over Nazism.

These archival photographs are extremely relevant nowadays as attempts to review the results of World War II, to rewrite the history and decisions of the Nuremberg Trials are being made. Learning the historical facts is of great importance, in particular, in order to guard against casting doubt on the principles the United Nations was established on after World War II.
