AFGHANISTAN, UNHRC 57th Session

Statement by a Russian representative during the enhanced interactive dialogue on Afghanistan, 57th Session of the UN Human Rights Council
(September 9, 2024, Geneva)

We are closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan. In our interactions with the Afghan authorities, we urge them to fulfill their previous commitments to establish an inclusive system of governance that considers the interests of key ethno-political groups, to combat terrorism and drug trafficking, as well as to uphold the basic rights and freedoms of the population.

However, we are concerned over the restrictions on access to education for girls and young women in schools and universities. We believe that non-discriminatory education is key to successful social and economic development of modern society. We expect that Kabul will take the necessary steps to address this issue in the near future.

We note the unacceptable attempts by the US and its allies to politicize the delivery of humanitarian aid, especially given that the "collective West" is responsible for the country’s dire situation. The international community must not forget the war crimes committed by the US and NATO forces during their 20-year presence in Afghanistan. Their lofty promises to bring lasting peace have proven to be nothing but empty rhetoric. The Afghan people, who have endured immense suffering, are still left to face their numerous challenges alone, under continued unilateral sanctions and an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
