BURKINA FASO, 44th Session of the UNHRC Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review

Statement by a Russian representative on the national report of Burkina Faso at the 44th Session of the UNHRC Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review

(November 6, 2023, Geneva)

We note the difficult human rights situation in Burkina Faso, which is linked to increased terrorist activity in the northern and eastern parts of the country, as well as unresolved internal socio-economic problems.

We note that, despite all the difficulties, the Government of Burkina Faso is doing everything in its power to stabilize the situation and fulfil its human rights obligations.

The Russian Federation recommends Burkina Faso to:

1. Continue taking purposeful steps to improve national legislation on human rights and freedoms.

2. Ensure protection of the rights of vulnerable groups, in particular women, children, persons with disabilities, the elderly and ethnic minorities.

3. Continue taking measures aimed at adjusting the situation in the judicial and penitentiary systems.

4. Allocate the necessary resources to implement the national plan of action for human rights education.

5. Continue implementing the road map on providing assistance to victims of terrorism.

The Russian Federation believes that, given the current circumstances, the international community must effectively assist the authorities of Burkina Faso in overcoming its acute human rights and security issues.
